I’m Not Society

by Shane Simpson

Inspired by the student poetry of Poetry Workshop
(LARTS 332, Fall 2013)

“Thank you for letting me be myself.”
“That’s not fair.”
“What’s not fair?”
“I’m not allowed to be myself.”
“Darling, all I’d ever want is for you to be yourself.”
“That’s not what Society wants.”
“Society? What do you mean? Who’s Society? Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“I’m sorry.”
